Understanding Dyslexia

Booklist

From Booklist, Copyright (c) American Library Association. Used with permission.

This book from the Understanding Disabilities series (6 titles) is intended less for children with dyslexia than to help other readers understand friends' or classmates' struggles. Despite a cheerful tone and an effort to be neutral, the book's assertion that learning disabilities are merely differences runs in contrast to its tendency to highlight the difficulties that people with dyslexia face. The strongest parts of the book are its lists of traits of dyslexia, as well as the general descriptions of helpful strategies to support friends with this learning difference. It would be nice to see more specifics about how the dyslexic brain works or more specific strategies that can help people overcome the hurdles of dyslexia. This book is a start, though, and it may inspire interested readers to seek out more in-depth material.
