Unique is the word for the scaly star of this entry in the Asian Animals series (6 titles). The large-format book opens with a world map that zooms in on Southeast Asia, where four of the eight pangolin species can be found. From here, double-page spreads discuss the animal's habitat, body and defenses, insect diet, solitary lifestyle, and babies. The text is brief without being stilted and utilizes colored headings and boldfaced vocabulary, later defined in a glossary. The star, however, is the extra-large pangolin photo on each page that lets kids see this creature up close. Additional facts (though the pangolin's threatened or endangered status is never mentioned) and kid-friendly online resources, including a downloadable pine-cone pangolin craft, make this a fine introduction to a curious critter.
