Briggs' latest Alpha and Omega novel (after Burn Bright, 2018) is like a familiar, comfortable sweater on a cold night. While it sticks to the formula of the other books in the series, this entry continues to deepen the relationship between Charles and Anna while it offers a new mystery for them to solve. A group of squatters on land owned by Leah, the Alpha's mate, go missing, and Anna, Charles, and pack berserker Tag are sent to get to the bottom of the disappearance. The team traces the problem to a godlike creature, the Singer in the Woods, and the situation becomes more dangerous when the trio realizes that the Singer has made a pact with some local black witches. Series fans will understand that this brings back the pain of Sage's betrayal, even as Leah and the Marrok join the battle against the Singer, which forces Leah to make a painful choice regarding her long-lost son, Zander. Readers who love Briggs' universe will be pleased by this entry in the ongoing saga.

Deep in the Northern California woods, a small, off-grid community called Wild Sign has lost all of its residents, all seeming to leave their belongings behind. When the FBI discovers that it is private land, they hand it off to the business that owns the property--Aspen Creek, Inc. which is the business owned by the Marrok's pack. As ties to the land are found connected to the Marrok's wife, Leah, protagonists Charles and Anna agree to investigate what could have happened to the people of Wild Sign. As they begin to dig into the mystery of the missing residents, Charles and Anna find deadly secrets buried in music, and when the woods sing, it is impossible for two werewolves to resist. An old power is waking, and it is ready to walk in the world again. Briggs has created an urban fantasy series that is filled with action and emotion, with growing character arcs for both protagonists and their surrounding family. VERDICT The sixth "Alpha and Omega" book continues to build a realized world of the Montana pack and its members. An intriguing ending will have fans looking forward to the next book.--Kristi Chadwick, Massachusetts Lib. Syst., Northampton
