The prevailing point to keep in mind is that the Electoral College is another restraint that is purposefully meant to temper the tyranny of hte majority against the rights and interests of political minorities. This ensures that the people's will is carried out as best as possible while also ensuring a canidate with a balanced policy approach, thus ensuring protection for the minority. In this case, the minority consists of smaller states that might have different interests than some of the more population-dense states.
